The Danish Gambling Authority announced on Monday that the licensing window for land-based casinos is open for new applications and renewals. This decision follows the implementation of the Consolidated Act No 1182 in September 2025.
Under the new regulations, the regulator can issue permits valid for up to ten years. Companies must submit complete applications with all documentation by 3 November 2026.
Application Criteria and Market Overview
Each application requires consultation with local municipalities, police chiefs, and relevant ministries. Evaluators will review financial stability, sector experience, and liquidity. Ownership details and geographical factors also influence the decision.
Denmark currently operates seven land-based casinos in cities including Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Aalborg. Despite the new licensing opportunity, land-based gambling generated DKK378 million ($58.26 million) in GGR in 2025, representing a 5.6% decline and accounting for 3% of the total market.
In contrast, the online sector continues to grow. Online casinos recorded DKK4.31 billion in GGR, accounting for 38% of the market. This figure marks a 12.1% increase from the previous year.
